Creating a CNAME record for any one of the domain addresses or subdomains you have in the hosting account allows you to point it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain address will lose all of its records - A, MX and so forth, and will take the records of the domain it is being pointed to. In this light, you can't create a CNAME record to point your domain to a third-party company and keep a working email service with the first provider. Additionally, it is important to note that a CNAME record is always a string of words rather than a number as it is frequently wrongly identified as the A record of the domain name being redirected. One of the major uses of a CNAME record is to direct a domain address you own through one company to the servers of another provider assuming you have set up a website with the latter. This way, the Internet site will appear under your own domain name, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party provider.

CNAME Records in Shared Web Hosting

Setting up a CNAME record with our shared web hosting is very easy. If you want to create an Internet site through a different company which offers online web design services, you can easily forward a domain name hosted here and use it for the site. Last, but not least, if you have a web-based store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you'll be able to set up a CNAME record for the www subdomain and redirect it to the main domain name, so all your visitors will be forwarded to a secure URL.

If you have a semi-dedicated server from our company and you wish to create a CNAME record, it will require just a couple of mouse clicks to complete this task. To create a CNAME record, you'll only have to select the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), type in where the latter is going to be pointed to and save the modification. The new record will be active almost right away in our system and will propagate worldwide within a few hours.
