The dot US country-code extension was set up in 1985 and assigned to the United States, but it was opened to the public in 2002. It is amongst the most widespread country-code extensions since quite a lot US business entities prefer to use a local domain and the US market is amongst the largest around the globe. Quite a few institutions, agencies and local governments also had or still have second-, third- or even fourth-level .US domains together with their official .GOV domain names.
